The Rules

[ ♥ ] Stay active. We understand you prefer to keep your character alive through commenting rather than putting up a post every couple of days, but please don't just leave your character in a limbo, especially where there are others that are interacting with him/her. An opening post is required within the first week after the application is approved. Afterwards, we require at least one journal entry every second week.

[ ♥ ] No God-moding or Meta-gaming. You can not control another's character by any means unless you have received permission from the other player. The Auditors' approval as well as the approval of the opposing player is needed in order to kill another player's character. Do not make your characters perfect and exempt them from getting injured, outwitted, etcetera. Also, do not bleed OOC knowledge into your characters. Let them discover everything on their own.

[ ♥ ] Stay In-Character. A character will change, evolve and adapt to the circumstances that they experience in the RP, but keep it in the boundaries of their established personality.

[ ♥ ] Use proper English with proper grammar, spelling and punctuation; IJ has a nifty little spell check button after all. Occasional mistakes are overlooked, but keep it reasonable. And please try and keep your use of languages other than English to a minimum. If you are not fluid or near fluid in the language in question, please do not use that language at all. Also remember to include an OOC translation for the other players.

[ ♥ ] Respect others. This is pretty self-explanatory. There will be absolutely no tolerance for any type of discrimination OUTSIDE OF THE GAME, while there will exist such things IN GAME it is very important to keep IC and OOC separate. If you know that you will be unable to stand crude language, racial slurs or discrimination, then you are advised NOT to apply to this game. Furthermore, all kinds of relationships are welcomed in this RP.

[ ♥ ] Learn to differentiate OOC from IC & keep OOC drama away from the RP. You are not your character. There will be squabbling between characters within the RP, but that does not mean the player is personally attacking you. If you think this is the case, then approach the Auditors instead of potentially causing drama.

[ ♥ ] In Character Actions WILL result in In Character Consequences (ICA=ICC). Remember this, anything your character does can and will have consequences. If your character finds it fun to abuse or even kill others, you should expect the character to be arrested and thrown in prison or even worse: out of the city.

[ ♥ ] Age. This game will contain conflicts on all sorts of levels and will most likely contain adult material as well; because of this we will not accept applicants under the age of 18 - unless permission has been given by the Auditors. This might happen, in very rare cases.

[ ♥ ] Time. One day in the game is one day in real life, so if it's April 1st in real life, it's also April 1st in the game.

[ ♥ ] Plot and plan to your heart's content. Though any plot that may affect main NPCs and/or other players' characters (for example: deaths, riots, rape, assaults and such things) must be approved by the Auditors.

[ ♥ ] Post in the appropriate communities. The main community, [info]babylonlost, will be used by the Auditors for applications and as a placeholder for the background of Babylon Lost. All logs should be posted in [info]babylon_logs. Intro posts, hiatus notices, and smaller, player-brainstormed events should be posted in the ooc community [info]babylonlost_ooc. All vital information can be found in this journal.

[ ♥ ] No Mary Sues/Gary Stus. Please, for all that is considered holy and honored, do not turn your character into a Mary Sue/Gary Stu during the course of the game. All characters are humans with human flaws, please keep them that way.

[ ♥ ] Mutations are allowed. But please, play close attention to what is outlined within the Mutations post. Do not abuse the mutations in order to try and create a Mary Sue/Gary Stu.

[ ♥ ] Please read the FAQ.

[ ♥ ] The character limit for this RP is 3 characters per person.

[ ♥ ] This is an Original RPG. And as such it is vital that ALL important character information is located where it can be easily reached at all times. Make sure to at least glance over the other characters to make sure you have a basic understanding about the people around your character.

Post Methods

[ ♥ ] Log/Thread posts
Setting: Where does this happen? Please include [Private] or [Public] so people know if their characters may have seen something or not had they been where it took place.
Time: WHEN is this taking place? Please include DATE [DAY/MONTH] and if possible TIME.
Characters: Which characters are involved? This of course can be edited as more people arrive on the scene in case it is a thread.
Warnings: Is there anything that could be found as offensive or repulsive then make a note of this here.

[ ♥ ] Journal posts
This concerns the personal journals for each character. This is a place for an individual to put down notes, daily events, or simply a method of communicating. Other members will comment in the journal (as their character) to chat, inquire, or the like. If filtered to a specific individual (or seen only to their eyes), be sure to mark it as so.
As well, take note that journal entries are expected to be made in first person perspective.

[ ♥ ] Bulletin posts
The Bulletin board is located near the town center of Babylon and this is where the Auditors and the other characters are able to post requests and similar things. Need someone to help you build up a wall or train you in some kind of defense, looking for a pet or just something out of the ordinary in the surrounding? Post a notice and see if you get a response.

[ ♥ ] OOC posts
ALL OOC posts are expected to be posted in the [info]babylonlost_ooc community; this might be everything from random idle chatter between members to questions and plot points, to introductions and character dropping.

Mutations

The genetic mutation can be divided into three major groups: mental, physical and biological. Below there is an outlining off all these three mutations along with their effect.

Mental Mental mutations are a rather uncommon occurrence in the new world. Those that suffer from a mental mutation are people that very rarely display their powers since that would brand them an outcast in society and as good as always lead them to being either arrested by the military (which is rumored to lead to the person being used as guinea-pig for unauthorized experiments) or the local militia which either kill the person displaying the mutation or violently exile them from the city. Only about 10% of the mutated that have been encountered have had mental mutations.

Mutated powers may include; mind gazing; low level telekinetic; extreme intelligence; extremely fast learning abilities or perfect photographic memory.

Physical Physical mutations are to a certain degree tolerated but highly frowned upon since it’s nearly impossible to conceal. Those that have a physical mutation that can not be concealed can count on being frozen out and ignored and outright attacked when within city walls. Very few of the non-mutated population would ever go anywhere near a person with a physical mutation. About 90% of the mutated that have been encountered have had physical mutations.

Mutated powers may include; additional limbs, unnatural body part such as wings, horns, tails etc, increased strength, increased agility, ability to reattach limbs after having been severed.

Biological Biological mutations exist in two different types; both are the extreme opposites of one another. It is the most usual but also the most unusual of any mutations. 99,9% of all those that carry a biological mutation turn into undead being within days of the infection due to the virus breaking down and altering the cells within the body, but a mere 0,1% of those infect survive and the virus adapts them to new being with a new outlook on life.

This mutation is extremely rare, to the point where it’s talked about as only ghost stories and fairy tales. The skepticism of person completely mutated into something so powerful is widespread and most people consider them as stories to scare small children into obedience in much the same way as the Boogieman once was. In the military's classified files there exists ONE case of this mutation, it was encountered after the war as the great wall of Babylon was being built.

Non-lethal mutations; Vampirism, lycanthropy.

Vampirism includes; increased sight, agility, smell, some degree of mind gazing and blood deficiency (must be injected with fresh blood plasma every two days).

Lycanthropy includes; increased smell, strength, hearing, speed and stamina, increased body hair and severe allergy towards silver.

Mental and Physical mutations are playable and may be chosen by the players from character creation.
Biological mutation is controlled by the Auditors, they choose who - if any - that should be allowed to carry such mutations.

Religions and factions

Since the late 21st century, religion has come to play a vital part in the life of the people around the world, much more than it previously had and in ways that many had never been able to dream of. After the Great War the apocalyptical religions blossomed and the once great religions spoke of the end of the world as well – everything no longer revolved around life but it shifted its focus towards death and destruction.

Christianity, Judaism and Islam:
Christianity has managed to keep its place as the world’s largest religion, although it's not as large as it was before the apocalypse. Those that follow it viewed everything, the meteorite, the virus and the mutated as a punishment from God due to the humanity's ungodliness and the Christians preached about how all the doomsday prophecies got fulfilled. The head of the Christian following in Babylon have stricken fear into the heart of a great part of their followers.

Judaism and Islam have also preached of doomsday and the end of the world and everything that has happened as punishment for the infidels and the lack of faith in the lord.

Buddhism, Hinduism and Spirituality:
Buddhism is the only religion that is almost exactly how it has always been. Due to most of China being laid to waste in the years following the Meteorite and the Great War a Metropolis was founded in a secluded part of the Tibetan mountains. This Metropolis – Nakchu – is the center of the Northern (Tibetan) Buddhism.
Hinduism has changed a bit from how it was perceived and how it viewed the world from the apocalypse, it has gotten somewhat affected by the events around the world and today many of the old Hindu believes have been mixed with the Islamic views of the world, though they do still believe in their multitudes of Gods.

The last and second largest religion in the world now is what is called Spirituality. It got a huge upswing after the apocalypse and as many people felt disappointed or betrayed by the other religions they turned to Spirituality instead. This includes everything from Nature worship to the invocation of Spirits, Demons and Aliens.

Atheism although it exists has most certainly taken a backseat this time as not only religions but also viewpoints has come to matter more for people – people wanted something to believe in.

But not only religions have come to matter in this time and age, also strong viewpoints have surfaced since the Great War. These viewpoints have more or less split the world into two camps:

Pre-mutants: The Pre-mutants see the mutants as the next step in the evolution, it is a natural step and it should be embraced rather than ignored and feared. The Pre-mutant organizations have been known to commit damage to things, buildings and people belonging to those who have any connection to any kind of research or experiments on mutants. Some Pre-mutant groups fight for equal rights between humans and mutants and some are strong militant organizations that would not hesitate to kill and/or kidnap people who they see as opposing the mutants. Some see the mutation as some kind of sickness that can be cured just by believing in God.

Anti-mutants: The Anti-mutants see the mutants as an abnormality and think that they should all be eradicated. They are a threat to humanity, a plague that threatens to destroy the world more than they already have. Some people join this faction because in their eyes the mutants are dead people that should be allowed to rest in peace and the infection is looked upon as a crime against nature and mankind, a threat that needs to be handled.

Martial law – the laws of the city

[ ♥ ] The government is allowed to detain anyone deemed to be threatening state for renewable 45-day periods without court orders.

[ ♥ ] All public demonstrations are banned.

Social Casts

Babylon has a very, very small upper class and a moderate middle class. Most people living within the cities are counted as lower class citizens. Only those that have inherited money and a noble bloodline that hails from before the downfall of modern civilization are counted to the highest class. Upper class families usually have a house of their own, not always something flashy but at least they are not sharing their roof with anyone outside the family.

The middle class citizens are mostly those who run their own companies, or handle companies for the upper class. A middle class family can in some rare cases afford a smaller house/cottage but mostly they have a larger apartment within some of the better equipped houses.
The lower class citizens are workers; they’re the ones that make sure the city and everything within it function as it is supposed to. Every working family is given an apartment by the city governing body; it is never anything flashy but always has whole windows, running water, heating and a front door that locks. The less fortunate and non-working part of the underclass also mostly have access to an apartment, it could be something less than safe that is shared with a lot of other people, running water and heat can exist if the occupants are able to pay for it.

Outside the basic social casts are the Law enforcers. These are the men and women working for the Police, Military and the governing body itself. They are almost always middle class citizens but due to bribes and pay-offs they can afford to live a little better than most in the middle class.

Organization and associations

Babylon Police
The Babylon Police is just a puppet organization for the Military; it's their public branch working the streets. Though not all those that work for the police are military they all have a background in law somehow. Some are law students, others ex-cons, former security guards etc. The work that the Police force do does not differ greatly from that of their workings in the early 20th century.

The Military
While not all Police are military, all military are police. The military handle the protection of the city from outside forces such as other Metropolis and the ever present mutant threat. They also serve as a backup for the police, running a few prisons, taking care of inmates deemed not fit for imprisonments and other not too pleasant jobs. The governing body consists of ten of the highest ranking officers within the military.

The Health faction
The Health factions are a group of hospitals, emergency centers and bio-analytical labs. Their work stretches from care taking of older citizens, handling those that are injured and writing out recipes for medicine to research and biological tests on the mutational virus. The Health faction is rumored to be handled by a twisted ex-military.
